The Knowledge Network

The XRwise Knowledge Network is building a learning platform that makes sharing knowledge more sustainable, eases access to knowledge, and helps make teaching at universities more intuitive. To do this, we're using open source tech and open education strategies to boost inclusion, diversity, and accessibility in teaching and research.

Challenges that are increasingly arising for universities that rely on XR and VR technologies in teaching are: (1) ensuring the sustainability of existing projects, (2) overcoming administrative challenges, (3) continuing to use technology and resources from past research projects, and (4) avoiding isolated solutions in individual laboratories. In addition, the unstable world of large platforms, such as the (5) closure of Mozilla Hubs and the resulting unusable seminar rooms and laboratories, creates further difficulties for universities.

The XRwise platform is based on the open-source cross-reality technology XRevent, which was developed at HAW Hamburg over the past five years. It connects physical and virtual spaces, users, and content and consists of a VR app and a web-based creator for easily creating 3D spaces. A key unique feature is the integration of real infrastructures: IoT interfaces allow laboratory, conference, and seminar technology to be controlled in VR with virtually no latency, enabling remote learning and inter-university exchange.

The cooperation project is led by XRwise gUG (haftungsbeschränkt) and cooperates with the Immersive Lab at HSHL and the Digital Reality Research and Transfer Center (FTZ) at HAW Hamburg.

The project receives the IGP funding in the area of „Education and Information Access“ from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The project sponsor is VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH.
