Standardization focus

We contributed to ITU-T Recommendation P.812, Principles of subjective test methods for interactive virtual reality (VR) applications (2024), developed within ITU-T Study Group 12. In total, we have made 17 contributions to international standardization bodies.

Transfer focus

Why it is worth the years

A study convinces the people who read it. A test method inside a Recommendation is used by laboratories that never read the study, for years afterwards, and it decides what “good” means when a system is procured. That is the slowest route from research into practice and the one with the longest reach. It also imposes a discipline that publication alone does not: a method has to be written precisely enough for strangers to repeat it and arrive at the same answer.

From physiological measures to P.812

The oldest contributions here are from 2013 and concern how people are asked: whether the order of rating scales changes the judgement, and whether physiological data show a change in cognitive state that a rating scale misses. Out of that came a proposal to use physiological measures as an additional test method for speech quality, and later contributions on human influencing factors for ITU-T Recommendation G.1035. The same thread led to the work item P.IntVR in 2021 and, through contributions on test design, quality dimensions, social acceptability and test equipment, to ITU-T Recommendation P.812, Principles of subjective test methods for interactive virtual reality applications, published in 2024.

Beyond the ITU

Two contributions sit outside the ITU. One went to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 2, better known as MPEG, on use cases and technologies for metaverse-related experiences. The other went to the DKE at DIN and VDE, on a VDE application guide for digital qualification in healthcare — the question of what people have to be able to do before a digital system is allowed near patients.

A seat, not only contributions

The lab head is a founding member of DIN NA 043-01-24 AA, Metaverse and Extended Reality, since its constitutive meeting in October 2023. The committee mirrors ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 24 nationally — the body responsible for the computer graphics and environment representation that XR is built on, and the one German committee that did not exist before. Contributions argue a case from outside; a seat in the mirror committee is where the German position is formed before it reaches Geneva.
