Frequently asked questions

What the Immersive Reality Lab is, what it measures with, how to work with it and where its record is — answered in full.

What is the Immersive Reality Lab?

The Immersive Reality Lab is a research group at Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences, directed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jan-Niklas Voigt-Antons. It studies how immersive systems can be measured and built so they work for the people using them, combining extended reality with EEG, eye tracking and other physiological measurement. The lab has 11 research staff and 6 student assistants and works in healthcare, public space, industry and safety-critical training.

What equipment does the lab have?

A multi-room laboratory for room-scale XR, with 360° capture and walkthrough workflows and rapid prototyping for VR, AR and MR. Measurement is multimodal: EEG for cognitive and affective markers, eye tracking for attention and interaction, and behavioural logging linked to subjective measures. The equipment is used for user studies with external partners as well as for the lab's own research.

Which standards has the lab contributed to?

The lab contributed to ITU-T Recommendation P.812, Principles of subjective test methods for interactive virtual reality applications (2024), developed in ITU-T Study Group 12. In total it has made 17 contributions to international standardisation: to Study Group 12 on P.812, P.IntVR, P.PHYSIO, G.1035 and P.GAME, to ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 2 (MPEG) on metaverse use cases, and to the DKE at DIN and VDE on digital qualification in healthcare.

Where do I find the lab's publications?

All 258 publications are listed at immersive-reality-lab.de/publications, one page per publication with the full citation, and filtered by type at /publications/journal/, /conference/, /standardization/ and /other/. The record of the lab's director is longer and carries abstracts and DOIs: it is at voigt-antons.de/publications.

Can I write my thesis at the lab?

Yes. Topics come from the lab's five research lines. Students at HSHL can apply at any time, on an advertised topic or with a proposal of their own. Students from other universities are welcome by arrangement, provided a supervisor at their home institution takes the formal role. Write to info@immersive-reality-lab.de. 70 bachelor's and 35 master's theses have been supervised since 2011.

Can my company work with the lab?

Yes, in two forms: joint proposals in public funding programmes, and contract research — user studies, evaluations and measurement campaigns run in the lab. Since 2015 the lab's director has raised €4.609 million across 22 projects and 10 funding lines, with partners from industry, clinical care and public administration. First contact: info@immersive-reality-lab.de.

What is the lab working on right now?

6 of its 18 projects are running, each with its own page at immersive-reality-lab.de/projects giving the period, the funder and the lab's role; completed projects stay online in the same place. The work spans XR and spatial interaction, Quality of Experience, psychophysiology and behavioural measurement, digital health and learning, and generative AI in media contexts.
