Tablet-Based Outpatient Care for People with Dementia

In Germany, the care of people with dementia is predominantly provided by general practitioners, sometimes with the involvement of specialists. Evidence-based diagnostic and treatment recommendations, such as those outlined in the current S3 guideline on dementia, are still insufficiently implemented in practice. As a result, outpatient care for people with dementia is often inadequate. The DemTab project is developing a tablet-based intervention aimed at sustainably improving outpatient dementia care. Tablets and smartphones are specifically used for this purpose. The intervention is designed to support guideline-based treatment planning for general practitioners, individual disease management for patients, and networking between patients/caregivers and different providers. General practitioners, for example, can use tablet-based reminders and prompts to manage medication, diagnostics, and therapy in line with guidelines. In addition, caregivers and relatives can be reminded of medication schedules and upcoming medical appointments. In total, 204 people with dementia and their relatives from Berlin and Brandenburg are expected to participate in the project. The project is funded for three years with approximately €920,000. If successful, the project will provide important insights into the tablet-based implementation of guideline-compliant dementia care. The intervention can subsequently be transferred to other conditions, such as heart failure or type 2 diabetes mellitus, thereby improving adherence to clinical guidelines.
