Field Trip to the Centre for International Light Art in Unna

On Monday afternoon we took students from Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences to Unna, to the Zentrum für Internationale Lichtkunst (Centre for International Light Art). The museum sits in the vaulted cellars of the former Lindenbrauerei and is devoted entirely to light art.

The guided tour took us through the collection and the current exhibition. The part that mattered most to us came at the end: we were shown the rooms we will use in spring 2027 for the exhibition "Future Human".

Light, space and perception are also at the heart of our work on extended reality. In the cellars you can see how strongly light changes the way a room is experienced, and before the tour was over the students were already discussing what might work in the space.

A cellar corridor bathed in red light, with loops of orange and pink neon tubing hanging from the vaulted ceiling and a doorway glowing blue at the end.

Blue neon words suspended on wires in a dark shaft, among them ICH, MOI, JAG, IO, MINA and YO, the word for I in several languages, some seen in mirror image.
Jan van Munster, Ich [im Dialog]: “I” in ten languages, in the brewery's old paternoster shaft.

Our thanks go to Christiane Hahn for the tour, to John Jaspers for making the visit possible, and to the team of the centre for having us. We are looking forward to spring.
